Interesting. DC’s been giving DeFalco a lot of work lately. [And no need to panic, Nightwingers, Higgins hasn’t said anything about being replaced so it looks like he’s just taking a break for an issue and DeFalco is covering him.]

Let’s Talk About Batman #7

And Nightwing #7, since those two titles finally converged this week.

I’ve talked before about how Scott Snyder is basically my favorite Batman writer ever. He tends to focus less on the “grimdark badass” side of the Bat comics that other writers tend to emphasize and instead explores how what happens to the person behind the mask influences how they act in costume.

He roots his writing very firmly in the city of Gotham, to the point where the city becomes character in its own right. He’ll often spend an entire page talking about a particular landmark, the reasons why it was built, and how it ties into what’s happening in the story. He also uses seemingly random trivia as a way of relating points anecdotally, often educating us in the process.

Batman #7 represents the culmination of everything he’s written for the Batman books so far, and it all goes back to a little miniseries called Gates of Gotham.

Just a warning: long post is long. I should get paid for this or something.

Spoilers after the cut.
