oh so social psychology note, as fellow female fans of asoiaf are being critiqued for not liking the way women are being treated
a study (rudman & borgida, 1995 and others like it - this is NOT ISOLATED) showed that after viewing sexist tv commercials, males interviewing a female showed significant differences in how they interacted with her
participants viewed a SINGLE commercial, either sexist or non-sexist
idk if i can make a table, but
asking sexist questions: 3.5 for sexist viewers, 1.88 for non-sexist viewers
memory for appearance (what she was wearing, what she looked like): 7.5 for sexist viewers, 1.52 for non-sexist viewers (!)
competence ratings: 4.15 for sexist viewers, 5.55 for non-sexist viewers
proximity (how close they sat to the female): 4.12 for sexist viewers, 2.66 for non-sexist viewers
dominance (talking over her, etc.): 4.42 for sexist viewers, 3.13 for non-sexist viewers
sexualized behavior: 4.27 for sexist viewers, 3.13 for non-sexist viewers
so in short, they were more likely to focus on what she looked like as opposed to how she answered questions, to ask sexist questions, to invade personal space and to judge her as less competent
(in addition, they had difficulty keeping women on this study as confederates because they were so goddamn uncomfortable. they weren’t told ahead of time what condition subjects were in, so sitting through interviews like this not even knowing if someone had been primed for sexist behavior and being treated like this was extremely unsettilng, as i’m sure you can imagine)
these differences are staggering and were after one commercial
multiply that by twelve to twenty and you get the effects of an hour-long program with commercials
so yeah, media is pretty fucking significant and we have the right to be upset about it
Considering that this is what people are exposed to for their whole lives, this is kind of a big deal.

White privilege is being able to make posts about racism without facing the backlash that people of color get for making those same posts, as well as getting more credit than they do for saying anti-racist things.
Male privilege is being able to make posts about sexism without facing the backlash that women get for making those same posts, as well as getting more credit than they do for saying feminist things.
Are you starting to see why I don’t make my own posts on these topics anymore
i had to present my preliminary final paper topic for my fan culture and celebrity class to a room full of people who knew very little about game of thrones. this was my resulting power point (with me using lots more words then what is shown, obviously, but this gives you the general idea). i‘m sure my actual paper will end up on here eventually and we can see how much my argument has grown!!!! it’s not due for a whole week tho, so everybody calm down.

Rachel Edidin, editor of Dark Horse Comics staged a revolution to try and usurp the so-called “idiot nerd girl” meme. I find this delightful.
