Subtleties in The Avengers:
- …Right before he was about to kill her, (and right before he got hit by Thor), the Hulk recognized Natasha.

this is not subtle. How can you not recognize that the hulk looks LESS angry. Like… he doesn’t even look angry at all. not even a little.
A lot of people didn’t catch it in the theaters, including me. Plus, considering all the action going on and the actual speed it was going at, it was easy to miss. Awesome that you caught it immediately, though! :)
This is what I’m always trying to get at with people. The Hulk is not the mindless rage monster everyone, including Bruce, has made him out to be. He may not be a genius like his counterpart, but the Hulk is intelligent. He can think for himself, he has a mind of his own. He is also not a rage monster. He is born of fear. He comes out when something is threatening Bruce’s life. The Ultimate defense mechanism. So as soon as he recognizes Natasha, he knows that she’s not a threat and doesn’t feel any need to attack her any more.
