I’m excited to share with you the final cover art (Korra drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and painted by me, with a background painting by Fred Stewart) for the upcoming Korra Book One: Air art book, published by our good friends at Dark Horse Books. This was a real labor of love (heavy on the labor) for Mike, Joaquim, and me and all those who helped as we put this book together, and we are so proud of all the great artists’ work inside and can’t wait to share it with all of you. The plan is to do one of these art books per “book” of Korra (so four total), which is daunting yet fantastic.

After experimenting with different production models (which we frequently do, for an endless variety of reasons), we are back to an Avatar-like, robust, in-house design and storyboard crew on Korra. There is an invigorating energy around the office these days because of it, which is welcome motivation at this point in our journey to get all these episodes delivered. (Journey? Hmmm… maybe blood-soaked battle is a better way to put it.)
Joining the battle once again is veteran Avatar character designer and longtime friend, Angela Song Mueller, seen here today in her cubicle. You can find her on Tumblr and deviantart. It is great to have her back.
I am planning on doing more “behind the scenes” type posts again, like I did when I first kicked off this blog almost a year ago. They may not razzle dazzle the masses, but I think those kinds of peeks into our process are of interest and provide inspiration, at least to creative types trying to make their own art or tell their own stories, big or small. Who knows, maybe some tidbit found here will help an individual unlock the door to a truly wonderful creation that eclipses everything we have ever put out into the world.
It is possible, but mainly I got a fancy new camera so I just want to shoot pictures and post them.

Avatar Aang Memorial Statue
It was commissioned by the Fire Nation some years after the end of the Hundred Year War for display in Republic City, where it stands as a symbol of peace and goodwill. The statue’s pedestal houses a museum that teaches the history of the past Avatars.

The first person to have their bending publicly removed was the man in the most comparable position to Yakone. I don’t think it’s a coincidence Amon targetted a mafia head to introduce himself as a powerful threat. Maybe it was the closest thing to showing his father that he’d become stronger than he had ever been by learning how to remove bending. Also it was through Yakone that Noatak saw the very worst in bending and so making his debut by attacking the legacy his father left and wanted him to avenge seems particularly fitting.
